Aim

Aim: To observe difference in waste water production in disperse dye synthesis
Requirements: p-Nitroaniline, Sodium nitrite, N,N-Dimethyl aniline, conc. HCL, Ice bath, Ice cubes
Procedure:
In beaker 1
A mixture of 3.5gm p-Nitroaniline, 10ml of conc. HCL and 8ml of H2O is heated until solution is completely clear.
Cool it to room temperature. Then keep in ice bath to bring the temperature at 5oC.

Add solution of 1.75gm NaNO2 in 20ml H2O slowly. Keep the solution in ice bath at 0-5oC.

Prepare a solution of 6ml N,N-Dimethylaniline in a mixture of 25ml H2O and 6ml conc. HCL. Cool to about 5C.
Add the second solution to first solution with stirring.

Make the whole bulk alkaline by adding 10% NaOH solution (20ml) drop wise.

Add 10ml saturated NaCl solution. Heat mixture to 40-50C for 15 minutes.

Cool to room temperature and then in ice bath.

Filter and wash with cold water and dry in hot air oven.

In beaker 2

Requirements: Sulphanilic acid, Sodium nitrite, Sodium carbonate, conc. HCL, N,N-Dimethyl aniline, Sodium chloride.

Procedure:
Beaker 1
Solution A >
Dissolve 10 gm Sulphanilic acid in solution of 2.5 gm Na2CO3 in 100 ml H2O.

Add solution of 3 gm NaNO2 in 20 ml H2O.

Cool mixture in Ice bath to 0-5C.

Add solution of 5 ml conc. HCL in 10 ml H2O gradually keeping the temperature below 6C.

Solution B >
Prepare a solution of 6 ml N,N-Dimethyl aniline in a mixture of 6 ml conc. HCL and 20 ml of H2O. Cool to about 5C.

Add solution B in solution A with stirring. Add 10% NaOH solution (20 ml) drop wise to make the solution alkaline.

Add 10 ml saturated NaCl solution.

Heat mixture till it starts to boil.

Cool it in Ice bath. Filter and wash.

Beaker 2
Solution A >
