They are the only part of thepopulation who really celebrate Christmas as a religious festival. MostEgyptian Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church and they have somevery unique traditions for Christmas.  Forthe 43 days before Christmas (Advent),from 25th November to 6th January, Coptic Orthodox Christians have a specialfast where they basically eat a vegan diet. They don’t eat anything containingproducts that come from animals (including chicken, beef, milk and eggs). Thisis called ‘The Holy Nativity Fast’. But if people are too weak or ill to fastproperly they can be excused.OnCoptic Christmas Eve (6th January), Coptic Christians go to church for aspecial liturgy or Service.

The services normally start about 10.30pm but somechapels will be open for people to pray from 10.00pm. Many people meet up withtheir friends and families in the churches from 9.00pm onwards. The servicesare normally finished shortly after midnight, but some go onto 4.00am!      Sham al-Naseem”Shamal-Naseem” means “sniffing the breeze.” On March 21 egyptians of all religionscelebrate this ancient holiday that marks the coming of spring by spending theday in the countryside or in parks for picnics.

Some have their picnic on aboat on the Nile. Food vendors, dancers and musicians also fill the streets. Traditionalfoods of this holiday including pickled fish and dishes made with midamis orfuul.
