INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this project is to controlling a wheelchair and electricaldevices by using MEMS ACCELEROMETER SENSOR (Micro Electro MechanicalSystem) technology. MEMS ACCELEROMETER SENSOR is a Micro ElectroMechanical System which is a highly sensitive sensor and capable of detecting the tilt.The sensor finds the tilt and makes use of the accelerometer to change the direction of wheel chair depending on the tilt.
For example if the tilt is to the left side then the wheelchair moves in left direction. Wheel chair movement can be controlled in Forward,Reverse, Left and Right direction along with obstacle detection using ultrasonic sensor.Automation is the most frequently spelled term in the field of electronics.The hunger for automation brought many revolutions in the existing technologies, whichhad greater development, is the MEMS ACCELEROMETER SENSOR.
These hadgreater importance than any other technologies due to its user-friendly nature. MEMSACCELEROMETER SENSOR based devices can be easily rechargeable to the commonman due to its simpler operation. This device is portable and user can wear it to his wristlike a watch and can operate it by tilting the MEMS ACCELEROMETER SENSOR.This project makes use of a micro controller, which is programmed, with thehelp of PIC C instructions.
And a 3-axis accelerometer MMA7660FC (I2C output) isused to sense motion. Control equipment fitted patients head or palm is used to controlwheel chair. The two geared DC motors are used for the motion of prototype model.
If the patient wants to move in a particular direction, say in left, the patient can tilt theaccelerometer in that direction. When the accelerometer tilts according to his/her need,the sensor reds the value in the X and Y direction. According to this value motor begin torotate. Here our micro controller current is too low to drive DC motors, we use L293Ddriver. We are here using RS232 interface also, to establish communication with thecomputer.

PIC16F877A Accelerometer based wheel chair direction control is developed on thePIC16F877A platform. PIC16F877A is a 40 pin enhanced flash micro controller. It is thefirst RISC based microcontroller fabricated in CMOS that uses separate bus for theinstruction and data allowing simultaneous access of program and data memory. It has 35single-word instructions except for program branches, which are two-cycle. Its operatingspeed is DC-20MHZ clock input, DC-200 ns instruction cycle.PERIPHERAL FEATURES ? TIMER0: 8-bit timer/counter with 8-bit prescaler ? TIMER1: 16 bit timer/counter with prescaler, can be incremented during sleep viaexternal crystal/clock ? TIMER2: 8 bit timer/counter with 8-period register, prescaler and postscaler ?
