I recently have had the pleasure to be involved in a Familiarization Trip with Bahia Principe Resorts. Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts is the hotel chain of Grupo Piñero, a prestigious Spanish family-owned group. Did you know they are the largest hotel chain on the Island? With first ever resort in the Caribbean being built just minutes from the tiny village of Rio San Juan on Playa Escondida beach, in the Dominican Republic and approximately 75 km from Gregorio Luperón International Airport – Puerto Plata. As many people want to know about the Island and its history? I asked the asked to our guides Will and Sandy from Coming2 transfers. The simple explanation was one county is French and other is Spanish. Researching this further on my own I found that this Island sure has had its share of upset over the centuries between France and Spain.

For those who are not aware of what Familiarization trips are, it is a trip where travel suppliers or travel supplier for travel agents, these trips are provided as a way for agents to gain an understanding and knowledge of the benefits within different destinations, or resorts that they can pass onto our clients.

We spent 5 days in the Dominican Republic discovering Puerto Plata and the Samana region. Our first stop was the Grand Bahia Principe San Juan where we spent 2 days exploring the resort and what it has to offer guests. Being one of the oldest resorts in the Bahia Principe chain within the Caribbean it is dated in comparison to other Bahia Resorts. The food was very satisfactory. The 2km beach is on a private beach. Being on the Atlantic side of the Island the sand is not the white powdery type. I was at this resort in March 2017, and I must say the resort has done a marvelous job cleaning up the seagrass off the beach. This is a solid 3.5-4 star resort, decent accommodations, good food, family resort. For the budget minded traveler looking for an alternative from Cuba, this resort would definitely be a good choice.

During our stay at GBP San Juan, we toured some of the local beaches such as Playa Grande where we had a delicious BBQ lunch of fresh Grouper, Red Snapper and Fried Chicken with rice, beans, plantains, and salad. With a few liter bottles of beer and pina colada in a whole pineapple made to order, it was best eats ever beachside. Just a short walk from Playa Grande we visited Playa Preciosa as well as playa Celeton.

On day 3 we traveled to Samana which a town and municipality in the Northeastern Dominican Republic overlooking Samana Bay where thousands of humpback whales come to give birth or find a mate in warmer water between January to March each year. Samana is considered one of the best places in the world for humpback whale watching. Adjoining the bay, is Los Haitises National Park, which is popular with ecotourist visitors, making it the perfect place for snorkeling and diving.
