Professor Higgins is portrayed as being highly educated. He is also self-indulgent, whimsical, and ill-mannered when it comes to interacting with other people. His passionate fondness for sweets and chocolates stands out in comic contrast to his seriousness and strict mode of living. Consequently his behavior strikes people as odd and unconventional to the point of being rude. Higgins’s volatile temperament and frequent outbursts provide some of the most amusing moments in the play.
He is insensitive to the feelings of those around him. His manner varies from friendly bullying when he is in a good humor to stormy petulance when anything goes wrong, but he is entirely frank and void of malice.Professor Higgins character reminds me of a military drill sergeant and also like a tough father. Professor Higgins is tough, straightforward and a no nonsense kind of a guy.
Professor Higgins is the type of drill instructor that you expect when you join the military. He’s a tough guy but not a bad or evil guy. He’s tough because he wants his trainees to stay focus and to do the best they can in a short period of time that He is with them. In the case of Liza Doolittle, she wants to learn how to speak and act as a lady. So, she wants Professor Higgins to teach her how to speak properly and also to dress properly.
The first meeting between Professor Higgins and Liza is like a future soldier reporting for the first time for his training. Professor Higgins tough guy and no respect attitude are on display the moment he met Liza. He asked Liza many question about her and also he tried to embarrass her by saying to her “I don’t want you.” Professor Higgins, even though rude and loud at times, is also a caring person and also sarcastic at times. He is also a good listener.
The second act of Pygmalion play reveals all these character traits.Professor Higgins’ rudeness was evident during his conversation with Liza. He shows no respect for Liza like when he asked her to sit down.
Instead of telling Liza to have a seat, Professor Higgins said to his friend General Pickering “shall we ask this baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out the window?” He ridicules Liza’s origins and he constantly say negative remarks about Liza intelligence because of her position in the society and also the way she talks. Liza was clearly annoyed by Professor Higgins rudeness towards herInspite of his character flaws, Professor Higgins is a good listener and he cares about the people around him. He doesn’t show it on purpose. He acts opposite of what he really feels. He’s in charge and He’s defensive …that’s why tough on Liza
