List 3 rules from this section where you feel your writing needs the most improvement I need to improve my usage of Rules 7, 8, and 10 in my writing. b. What did you learn from these 3 rules? I learned the usage rules of colons after independent clauses, dashes, and pronouns. c. How do you plan to implement these rules into your writing? I plan to study these rules and be aware of them when I write.
If I use the punctuation or grammar advice in my writing, I will check to see if I used the grammar correctly. 2. Section II: Elementary Principles of Composition a. What are the 3 most important principles you took from this section? The three most important principles were principles 14, 17, and 21.Smith 2 b. Based on these principals, where do you feel your writing needs the most improvement? I need to improve my use of the active voice, keeping only the essential words in my sentences, and not mixing tenses/speakers in my writing. c. How do you plan to implement these principles into your writing? I plan to study these principles beforehand and be mindful of them as I write each sentence of my paper.
3. Section V: An Approach to Style a. Closely read pages 66-69. What is Stunk and White’s thesis (or main argumentative point) about writing “style”? The approach to style is by way of plainness, simplicity, orderliness, sincerity. b. How would you describe your writing “style”? Do you have one? If not, how do you write? I do not think I have a writing style.
I write in different styles depending on the goal of the paper. I can write in an objective style, emotional style, or an opinionated style. c. What are the 3 most important or helpful reminders you took from this section? The three most important reminders I read were Reminders 5, 6, and 13.
d. Based on these reminders about style, where do you feel your writing needs the most improvement? In my writing, I tend to finish the assignment and assume it is the best form it can be. In other words, I don’t revise a lot of my writing because, to me, it seems acceptable. ISmith 3sometimes also overwrite and overstate points my writing instead of stating the point clearly and shortly.
In my writing, I need to fix my consistency with the tense I am using in my writing. e. How do you plan to implement these tips into your writing? I plan to review them and be mindful of them when I write. 4. Revision Checklist a. On a new page, compose a “Revision Checklist” based on what you learned in this book. b. Your checklist can be more of a “bullet point” outline, but you must include AT LEAST FIVE different checklist points.
c. Consider this question in composing your checklist: What are the essential rules/principles/tips you should keep in mind when performing a writing task? d. Feel free to put these checklist points into your own words; you don’t have to replicate Strunk and White’s ideas.
?Smith 4Revision Checklist •Understand the rules of punctuation in order for your writing to avoid sounding informal and for you to avoid sounding inexperienced. •Avoid overstating and overwriting your ideas and sentences. Most of the time, shorter sentences transmit your point across better than longer sentences. •Know the differences between commonly confused words (among, between; uninterested, disinterested; effect, affect; ect.) and when to use them in your writing. •Use concrete, definite, and positive language in your writing.
This is the best way to hold the reader’s attention. Shakespeare was such a powerful writer because he reported essential details and painted a picture with his words. •Lastly, writing should be natural and an expression of yourself. The key to writing is simplicity and clearness. Using fancy words that don’t make sense or introducing off-topic ideas lead to confusion and bad writing.
