The development of staff can enhance the care off the patients of service users, continuing development is very important for a health and social care staff. Continuing development is developing on a skill which an individual already knows, it is their duty to keep their professional knowledge and skills up to date this is through the process of learning new things and reflecting. The staff can do this through self-directed learning, courses, study days, workshops, events, conferences, shadowing other staff and volunteering. (The Royal College of Nursing, 2018)
Continuing development gives updated policies and procedures the setting should follow, this is to promote the best working practice within the organisation. An example can be the whistleblowing policy, this is a policy with is which can be updated and more thing can be added onto the list, so if the individual is developing it will allow organisations to update the polices in their workplace. Continuing development can help an individual have their work up to date and prepare them for larger responsibilities, it will allow individual to have more confidence and be able to tackle new challenges every day.
An example of a staff who can continue developing to enhance the care of the patients/service users is a nurse, the more training a nurse would take the more it would benefit the patients. The types of training a nurse can take is revalidation, this is to maintain the registration to practice with the Nursing and Midwifery council, this process will help a nurse or midwife to demonstrate practice safely and effectively, a nurse would have to revalidate every three years. This can help enhance the care of the service users because many changes can occur within three years and this is for a nurse to learn the changes of safety and practice which has changed during this time period. Another training which a nurse can take is development opportunities, this is after qualifying as a nurse and gaining some clinical experience a nurse can take the next step of working in another field such as operating theatres, care for elderly or intensive care (they can even move to management or clinical academic research). This development can improve the care for the patients/service users because if the nurse is more experienced they would be able to provide better care for the patients as they know what to do because of taking advanced training in other sectors for example if a nurse is working in a clinic and gains some more experience by working in an operating theatre and goes back to the clinic then the nurse would be more experienced and would be able to provide more care at the clinic. Another training can be working as a nurse consultant, to gain more experience a nurse can apply for a job as a nurse consultant, for this job a nurse would be spending more of their time working directly with patients, this will bring many responsibilities such as developing personal practice, doing a lot of research and contributing to the education, training and development of the other nurses. Finally, another training a nurse may take is education and training roles, to become more experienced a nurse may train and educate the next generation nurses. (Health Careers, 2018).
Whilst doing work experience at the Village School the staff followed a policy called the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. This policy is to promote the welfare of the children and protect them from harm, abuse and maltreatment, this is to prevent harm to the child’s health or development and ensuring the child grows up with provision of safe and effective care. This is a policy with can be updated and from continuing development the staff would be able to learn all the new rules associated with this policy. It is to protect the child and it is important for the staff to know about the updated policy so if they do suspect any harm towards the child they would know how to handle the situation appropriately.
