The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth, also can be known as the planet’s life support system. It also contains 97% of the world’s water and also as the abundant protein supplier to the humans. Ocean livings indirectly reduce the climate change impacts on earth by absorbing carbon dioxide form the atmosphere. Beaches now are not as blue and as crystal clear as before. It has been a hard task to find a clear beach with happy marine lives. Ocean pollution in the current generations is being seen as a serious issue. This is because oceans are being polluted by variety of unwanted things and this pollutants seem to always have an increase each year.
Rapid growth of the Malaysian economic and the population causes the increase for the request of water supply which then leads to the release of the waste residual water from the residence, commercial and also the industries which causes the bad odour and even pollute the rain water and pollutes the ocean ecology system. Besides this, the disposal of solid wastes into the sea and ocean also adds the pollutants. Most of the solid wastes being thrown are the very slow rate of degradation especially the things that are made of plastic as they take decades to degrade.
Plastic waste seems to be a global crisis – those plastic rubbish are transported by the ocean across region and water bodies. As stated in the Science Magazine in 2015, Malaysia is the 8th unfavourable country in the worldwide for plastic disposal. China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are the five leading plastic polluters, which leads the dumping of those plastics into the ocean. Although Malaysia may not be in this list, but we are still in the Top 10 position globally for the source of plastic wastes.
Globally, 8 million tons of plastics are dumped each year into the world’s ocean. Reef Check Malaysia had led about 500 people to clean 15 Malaysian beaches early in March, 2018. Through this conduct, almost 14,000 plastic bottles, 6,200 bag made of plastics and 1,700 drinking straws were collected by the volunteers involved.
Plastics are not the only contributor for the pollution of the ocean and sea, the oil and gas industry seems to be a major threat to the marine life. This happens especially when the oil tank explodes or leaks in which the oil mixes with water and then the oil covers the surface of the ocean. This prevents the entry of oxygen from the surface into the water and also blocks the sunlight to enter into the water which affects the living things under the water. There is a gradual increase of the marine litter at the sea, which can be seen floating on the sea which then settles down on the sea bed and even at the coastal shore.
As large as the Earth’s oceans are, the amount of pollution that enters into the oceans from both man-made and natural activities has affected the marine ecosystems throughout the globe. When animals typically eat these pollutants that, in turn, means human will as well. There are several impacts due to the pollution of oceans.
Everyday, cytotoxic chemicals’ area unit is getting into our oceans. These cytotoxic chemicals have either been dropped on purpose from the surrounding industrial sources or they naturally flow off the land. As time goes, it will be directed into rivers and streams, that eventually winds up into our oceans. The first factor that leads to a polluted ocean is the effect of toxic wastes on marine animals. In this case, oil slick is unsafe to marine life from numerous points of view. The oil spilled inside the sea may get onto the gills and quills of marine animals, which it might bring about problem for them to move or fly appropriately or even encourage their posterity. in the long run, marine life can incorporate tumor, disappointment in the conceptive framework, conduct changes, and even demise.
Besides, oil spill glides on the surface of water prompts keep sunlight from reaching marine plants and impacts the procedure of photosynthesis. The other side impacts of marine live over long period are skin irritation, eye irritation, respiratory organ and liver issues. Furthermore, the flipside impacts that the community might face through the industrial and agricultural wastes consists of numerous toxic chemicals that are thought of unsafe for marine life. Chemicals from pesticides can collect inside the fat tissue of creatures, this subsequent in disappointment in their regenerative framework. on the other hand, chemicals used in industrial and horticulture get washed into the rivers and from that point, they are conveyed into the oceans. These chemicals are not broken down and they sink under the oceans.
Small animals ingest these chemicals and they are later eaten by substantial animals, which after now and then it influences the entire food chain. In synchronous, animals from affected food chain are then eaten up by human that influences their well being as poisons from these debased animals get deposited in the tissues of humans and might lead to cancer, birth defects or long term health problems.
Marine resources, the ocean and the sea are a significant part of our lives. We are obligated to take good care of it.There are some possible solutions to the problems stated above.
