What types of tourists visit the region?
In recent years, with globalization developing, there has been a growing interest in tourism in Cuba. From the research, the number of foreign tourists would increase from 3.5 million in 2015 to 10 million in 2030 (Newfarmer & Feinberg, 2016). It is clear that there would be an enormous amount of visitors goes to Cuba for diverse purpose in the future. In this chapter, the purpose is to look at tourist typologies in Cuba.
According to the reason speed developing of Cuba, there are various kinds of tourists traveling to Cuba, first one type can be presented generally business tourists. According to research, Leisure tourists spending makes up 94.8% in 2018, business tourists spending makes up 5.2% in 2018 (WTTC, 2018). Thus, business tourists are a small part of tourists in Cuba. Tourists traveling with relation to business is known at business tourists, it means that tourists go to a place do leisure activities in conjunction with business travel (International Trade Centre, 2001). In Cuba, there are a lots of foreign business companies, according to the survey (Cuba’s future), European union operates around 169 companies in Cuba in 2011. It is obvious that there would be lots of business people are coming to Cuba. Business tourists are coming for business conference and business negotiation. At the meantime, spending money and visit the landscapes in Cuba.
The second type is leisure tourists. Leisure tourists refer to the tourists travel to a far destination for purpose relaxing or releasing pressure (Groossens, 2000). Kenneth (2007) states Cuba is a destination where the second quite famous travel place in Caribbean. Thus, more and more tourists choose to visit there and seek for pleasure. Since there are particular geographical environment and climate (Eros, Lluis ; Eduado, 2018), Cuba has warm climate and agreeable weather, beautiful beaches and clean water quality, making Cuba become tourist resort, so tourists can do diverse recreational activities at the sea such as nautical activities, fishing and diving.
The third type is cultural tourist, cultural tourist can be claimed generally the people travel to a specific location in order to understand the life and history there by contacting local food, entertainment, architecture, drink, hand crafted and manufactured products (Seyed, Naciye, Seyed, 2016). Havana, the capital of Cuba, which is the most important city. Lots of historical attractions located in Old Havana, tourists can visit the old town by foot, leading Old Havana also can be called living museum, time capsule (Petrie, 2015). The numbers of heritages and old building in Old Havana, Petrie (2015) reported more than hundred building were located back as far as 1500s, so tourists go to there can contact local culture closely. To be conclude, the tourists who visit Havana or another location with historical significances relevant history or local culture can be claimed as cultural tourists.
Move to the fourth type, sex tourists. The sexual tourists could be defined as travellers who go to a destination for seeking sex services during the leisure time (Puccia, 2009). Cuba is a country where lots of travellers go to purchase sex service. According to Varadarajan (1996), there are 20 flight from Spain to Havana every week, around 200,000 single male tourists are carried to Caribbean for low price of sex. It follows that sex tourists are a part of all of tourists in Cuba.
To conclude, there are four types of tourist visit Cuba, which are business, leisure cultural, and sex tourist. Business tourists are going to corporation, meeting or conference, leisure tourists visit Cuba for escaping pressure and entertainment. Furthermore, cultural tourists are going to Cuba for feel local culture and visit heritages. Finally, sex tourist also could be included in tourist types in Cuba.
